Robert at My Blahg destroyed a blow-hard from the U.S. on the topic of continental defence, It is a little too long to post the whole thing but if you have a few minutes it is amusing.

Jax

I present for your amusement, my destruction of American Idiot, David Livingston.

As a child, I remember summer weekends when we would go to Canada to swim at Sherkston, listen to band concerts at Brock's Monument and watch the ships go through the Welland Canal. We spent so much time there, that I was 8 years old before I realized I wasn’t Canadian.
Okay, right from the start David wants us to know he was an idiot as a child. Perhaps this is so we'll excuse his idiocy as an adult.

It’s because I had such affection for Canada and its people that I find it so painful to watch a nation I once loved drift away from the values that made it great.
Honest honey, I only beat you because I love you.

Since 1945, there has been a pattern of Canadian reluctance to share the burden of defending freedom.
Let's examine that pattern. We joined the Yanks in Korea, Gulf War I, Bosnia and Afghanistan. In between these "refusals" to help out we've had peacekeeping missions in more than a dozen areas, such as Cyprus, where conflict has arisen. We've been a staunch ally in NATO and we worked hand in hand developing and implementing NORAD. But dammit, we forgot the gravy so I guess none of that counts.

If their shameful lack of responsibility were not bad enough, our neighbor to the north appears, at times, to take delight in subverting America’s attempt to deal with terrorism.
I'm sorry, next time we'll fly Maher Arar over to Syria ourselves so he can be tortured. Really now, we take delight in subverting America's attempt to deal with terrorism? This man should be beaten with a stick until he can cite even one example of how Canada has interfered in America's fight against the turrists.

Canadians are justifiably proud of their quality of life without ever acknowledging that they can afford expensive governmental programs because they depend on the United States to spend trillions of dollars to protect them.
Okay, I speak for the entire Canadian population when I release you from this horrible burden. And I'd like to apologize for making you poor Americans defend us all those times.

In 2004, the U.S. population was 10 times greater than Canada (293 million vs. 30 million) but we spent about 50 times more money than they did on maintaining a viable military deterrent ($420 billion vs. $9.1 billion). America’s per capita spending on the military was $1,433, compared to Canada’s $303.
Is it really our fault that Americans are a bunch of chumps who spend far too much money on their military? I mean, it amounts to more than the next ten nations combined. Are Americans so paranoid that they have to be prepared to defend themselves from a simultaneous attack by ten nations? Besides that, it should be pointed out that there are approximately 30,000 Canadians serving in the US armed forces right now. So we more than make up for the spending deficit by providing manpower to the US military. However, if it will make Americans like this idiot feel better, the next time Canada needs defending they can just send over those 30,000 Canadians to do it.

The armed forces have so long been neglected that they are little more than a parade ground police force that is more suited to protecting food shipments than engaging in real battle.
This is just plain ignorant. But then, what else would you expect from an ignorant right whinger.

The refusal of the government to live up to its obligations shifts more of the burden to allies like England who are willing to take part in the struggle to preserve democracy around the world.
Sorry chump, but invading Iraq does not count as preserving democracy around the world. At best it's forcing democracy down the throat of a sovereign nation.

I suppose it's natural to leave the fighting to others if you can, but what is particularly galling is the Canadian’s incessant criticism. Americans are used to having to fight everyone else's battles, but if we’re sending our young men and women to die in the place of Canadians, the least they could do is not subvert our efforts.
Climb down off the cross, idiot. America is criticized because America thinks it's beyond criticism and can do whatever it wants. And it's not Canada's fault that America keeps getting itself into quagmires. If they listened to our criticism instead of mewling about it, they would have avoided two of them.

The following statistics give a clear picture of the discrepancy between the two nations in regards to wartime casualties. Since 1945, the United States has lost 120,000 men while Canada lost 291. America has lost more than 412 times as many men in combat as Canada has in that time frame.
Now this idiot is just getting creepy. Is he saying he'd be satisfied if more Canadians had died? That aside, the number seems rather low and I doubt it includes the Canadians who joined the US armed forces and were killed in Vietnam. (Link)
