It's the money, stupid
Remember, Hollywood is an international business and American right-wing hegemonic theocracy doesn't sell well in the rest of the world. Hedonist California Americanism does sell well and will therefore be the main product that Hollywood produces.
By the way, the Hollywood neighborhood in Los Angeles has largely been abandoned by the studios. The L.A. production has moved to other parts of the city. Hollywood is now a slum.

Everywhere you look in the blogosphere today, you see a debate raging over whether or not Hollyweird needs to change its evil, evil ways, in order for the Dems to garner more votes. As smart as some of these bloggers are, I think they're missing a central point. It isn't "elitism" or the crazy-ass idea that artists of various stripes have these "rights of free expression" that we need to protect that drives production in "culture" or anything else. It's Capitialism --with a big, giant fucking "C".
TV execs are in the business of making money. They make money, for the most part, in the form of advertising sales. Advertising revenue in the movie, music, and videogame industries, in the form of product placement, is on the rise.
Advertisers like to reach lots of people who like to buy lots of shit.
Now, if the people who watch the 700 Club were a giant economic force that liked buying shit more than heathens who like Survivor or CSI, you'd see Pat Robertson on ABC 7 nights a week. But, you don't. Do you? (Link)
